Iris is a Time Lord. She has time machine. And she experimented with
samples of our blood last summer, so she knows she can eliminate KA from
her body if she were to pick it up. She's positive she's not in any danger
if she takes me home.
...Or if she takes me to Oakland the moment before Dave dies. We think we
can pick him up, bring him to my house a few months later, after the dust
settles. Come up with a public cover story. Which isn't ideal, but 'my time
traveler girlfriend saved him' would only fly as fiction.
Shaun, it's Dave. I can't promise you this will work, but Iris is
pretty sure.
[Shaun hasn't lived through losing Dave yet, but he knows it's coming, and has been sitting with the guilt of it ever since he'd found out. He doesn't have Maggie's interest in him, but Dave is his friend, and the idea that he could be saved?]
[He doesn't know how much of this he gets to remember when he gets back, but it's going to be a hell of a lot easier to leave Dave in Oakland if he knows he'll be okay.]
Maggie knocks on his door later the same day, looking giddy with relief and
not sure what to do with it.
The second the door opens, she'll tell him, "We got him. He's safe,
settled at my house with Alaric, taking care of my dogs and helping with
custody plans for Alaric's little sister."
Shaun hasn't literally been holding his breath, but he lets it out now anyway, stepping back so that Maggie can come in if she wants to. He grins at her. "I wasn't sure the weirdness of all this," here he gestures at the Barge around them, "would be able to touch our real lives. I'm glad I was wrong."
"So fucking glad," Maggie agrees fervently. "Iris's inmate graduated, so
she had a deal, and she'd promised it to me for Dave if she couldn't save
him without it. So we had to figure out the logistics if she was giving
her deal away to someone else. And it was John's graduation; if anyone
should have that deal, it was him. He needed it."

You really think it could work?

[Soft and as sure as she can bear to be before it's real:] Yeah, Shaun. I do.
The Barge is one big impossibility machine, and Iris in particular eats impossibilities for breakfast. I like our chances.

I think if anyone could figure it out through sheer determination, it's you. Tell me how it goes?

Of course, Shaun. I'd never keep that from you. Dave is one of your people, too.
We're heading out in a little while, and Iris usually comes back same day, no matter how long she's gone. You'll be my first call.
See you soon.

Good luck.
